What is the Bible? And why should I bother spending hours, upon days, upon years reading it?
At the very minimum, the Bible is a book written by 40 different people over thousands of years, providing a detailed historical account of events that shaped the world as you know it today. These people’s writing withstood the test of time, and outlines principles that many of the successful secular self-help books today either agree with or were inspired directly by. Whether you believe it is inspired by God or not, this book has impacted every society on earth significantly — save a handful of small islands.
At most, it is the written word from the God that created you and everything in existence. It tells you who you are to him, why you are here, how you “should” live, and what will become of you at the end of this life.
So, in a nutshell, there is no question that this book is significant. I think time and ability are the biggest obstacles most people face in reading it. I’m sure most people at some point or another have a desire to read the Bible but then lose interest. My aim is to help people read the Bible and find out for themselves whether this is just a book about self-help and right living, or the written word of the one true God.
So, in order to help best, I think it is important to establish why you haven’t read the Bible, or don’t want to. Below are some common reasons.
- 01 “I’ve tried to read it. I start off strong, but my interest fades as I read on.” Coming soon
- 02 “It’s a waste of time. There are plenty of self-help books that say the same thing in a hundredth of the time.” Coming soon
- 03 “I don’t believe in God, so why would I read a book from ‘God’?” Coming soon
- 04 “I want to read the Bible now. Where do I start?” Coming soon
If none of these fit you, reach out and tell us which one is missing.
Where this piece sits. This is the conviction lane: it is my argument for why the book is worth your hours, not a neutral summary. The two floors I am working between — a historical document at minimum, the word of God at most — are laid out above so you can see exactly what I am claiming and what I am not. The four branches below it are the ones I owe you next.
